The Costa Maya
The Costa Maya (Mayan Coast) is a small Caribbean tourist region in the State of Quintana Roo, Mexico, located a 4 hour drive south of the popular tourist destination of Cancún, and just an hour north of the Belizean border. The area has grown quickly after the construction of a large pier in 2001 to accommodate cruise ships docking from all over the world.
Cruise ships can easily be seen from the town of Majahual (ma-ha-wall) which is 2 miles from the cruise ship port. Majahual is a Caribbean coastal town which has white powder sand beaches, grass thatched palapas roofs, and a coral reef just off-shore, as well as several bars, restaurants, and shops. When the cruise ships are in port, the town is bustling with cruise passengers enjoying the festive atmosphere on the Caribbean shores of Mexico, and when they are not in port, relax with the friendly locals.
